Strange keyphrases

From time to time, I check the visitor statistics of my website. It’s interesting to see when the numbers go up, what months I’m particularly popular (seems to be whenever a book/magazine that I’m fortunate enough to be included in gets released) and how people land on my site, after being directed by results from a search engine.

Sometimes, what comes up as the keyphrases used on search engines can be quite interesting. Most of the time, people seem to land on my blog after searching for Lorraine Pascale’s ‘I can’t believe you made that’ cake.

These are some of the things people search for before landing on my website:
“where are toilets in hampstead heath”
“huda. well i guess you’ve found me”
“the most babybels eaten”
“can you double quantities for the i can’t believe you made that cake?”

I find the second one amusing mainly because I have another blog which is private and its location is unknown to everyone but myself. Some of my friends know I keep a secret blog, so I wonder if it was one of them trying to find it. Haha, anyway they’ll have no such luck as I don’t use my name or make any distinguishable references to my life in the other blog.

Catchup Post No.3

I recently got a Glidecam HD2000. Paired with my Canon 7D which I got during my trip back to Singapore, it makes for very interesting filming results. It’s supposed to aid in stabilizing shots, countering the shakiness that you get from handheld shooting. The result is a floaty feel (as you shall see in the video). Very, very chuffed with my new toy. I need a lot of practice, to get used to the way it works and the weight of the whole setup. My arms are still very much aching from last weekend. But I’m sure we’ll get there one day. :)

Excuse the quality of the video, I haven’t done proper colour correction on the footage and the “editing” was done in a hurry.

Catchup Post No.2

I’ve got a few posts to write on cooking/baking in the past month, but that can wait. For now, let’s cover the more recent news. I had quite a productive weekend (my favourite kind), I finally managed to send T a letter and the vanilla pods I promised to send ages ago, spent a lot of time walking around central London, catching up with friends in numerous cafes, visiting the CSM MA Communication Design and BA(Hons) Graphic Design exhibition shows and played with my newest toy, which shall remain a secret until the next post.

Firstly, the exhibition shows. In short, they were really good. I hadn’t been to an exhibition is a really long time and it was really inspiring. It made me want to be a student again. I really want to be able to make books and do some self-initiated projects and research like you’re able to when you’re a student. Not to say that you can’t do it after graduating, but I suppose you don’t really have the luxury of time like you do when you’re in uni (but somehow you never realise this when you’re in uni).

I loved The Success Publication by Andreas Christie Ryalen. Maybe because it’s such a relevant topic between me and my friends. Anyway, it was lovely to read.

Love the 3D windows/popups, the overlaying of the cards and the resulting shadows on the wall. Don’t think I actually bothered to understand what it was about at the exhibition, but it’s a physical installation by Will Quirk, based on his web-based attempt to slow down the reader and force them to take in each sentence, as seen here.

This screenprinted table cloth made me think of A and would probably be the kind of thing we’d have on our dining table if we lived together. :) Can’t recall who it’s by though. *Update* Lovely tablecloth designed by Irene Omodeo Zorini.

A feminist map of London that caught my eye. F MAP: HERSTORY LONDON by Laura Varzgalyte Nicely done.

Secondly, cafes. How lovely it is when you find a cafe that you like. Shino introduced me to Foxcroft and Ginger in Soho and The Vintage Emporium near Brick Lane. I really like The Vintage Emporium, with its rustic antique style and ultra-friendly staff.

I also went to The Nordic Bakery in Golden Square on Sunday with Silvia. Always good to have pastries+tea/coffee. I had the cinnamon bun, which I’ve been wanting to make ever since I got the cookbook. So maybe this weekend? :)

Catchup Post No.1

Ok so I realise I’ve been neglecting this blog again. As reminded by my dear friend Shino over the weekend. The reason being.. Facebook. Well, not really, but it is one of the reasons. Ever since coming back from Singapore, I’ve been ill (for a month!), then I’ve been very busy at work and then with additional freelance work.. And the rest of the time? I’ve been lazy. And I’ve been uploading my food photos to Facebook instead of here, after my friend Tracy, whose opinion I very much respect, convinced me to reactivate my account, put my food photos up there and use it to my advantage in terms of networking.

But I can’t say I really agree on the usefulness of Facebook for networking or career opportunities. But maybe it’s the way I use it. At the moment, it seems like it’s really just a means to procrastinate. At the very least, with this blog, I write posts that are more detailed than the one-liners that accompany my Facebook photo posts. So… Although I don’t think I’ll go and annoy my friends by deactivating my Facebook account for the umpteenth time, I might just try and restrain myself from spending too much time on it and keep up the blogging instead. Sounds like a plan? Indeed.

I’ve got a couple of things to recap, but let’s start off with something simple. Trophy Wife. I like them. This music video is pretty awesome. So have a look.

Never fall ill when you’re on holiday

Well I didn’t manage to do as much as I had planned to during my stay in Singapore. I was ill for more than a week and somehow also managed to get an impossibly bad backache, which is still hovering around. My family tried to feed me as well as they could (i.e. give me as much food that I’d been missing as possible), but to be honest, I was feeling out of of it most of the time and couldn’t enjoy it as much as I would have if I wasn’t ill. There was hardly any cooking on my part and I only managed to bake one cake. A simple genoise sponge, with peaches and strawberries and whipped cream, piped by my mum.

I had a brilliant time, playing with my 2 nephews and little cousin, but I caught a bug from one of my nephews, got my backache from carrying my 4 year-old cousin who was sleeping and had my own sleep interrupted numerous times by crying babies. You wouldn’t guess how much havoc these kids can cause just by looking at them.

Yes, they’re cute and I’ll miss them. But I got my Canon 7D, which is what I really wanted to get from my trip there. So at least as a consolation, I have quite a few HD clips of my nephews to watch and remind me of them. And even though the tube had severe delays when I was trying to get back from the airport, I came home to my own room, my own bed. The air just smelled different from Singapore. My nose can’t seem to pick up on the difference again today, but yesterday, it was really obvious to me. The air was just so cool and refreshing and it felt so good to be back that I crawled into my bed and slept for many hours, pleased with the fact that I didn’t need any air-conditioning.

I think, sometimes, you just need to take a break, for you to realise that you’re actually happy where you are. So London, though you irk me with your rubbish transport system, I love you and I am here to stay.

Back in the B.R.I.T.I say British isles

Homeward bound

7 hours before I head for Heathrow. I’m homeward bound, due to arrive in Singapore on Sunday morning. Looking forward to seeing my little nephews, baking cakes with my mum, hearing familiar Singaporean accents and eating lots of good food. Not so looking forward to the humidity and perspiration.

Happy Easter everyone.

Cake Club (Client Services vs Creative)

Well… I don’t know how to say this. But it appears I may have competition in Cake Club at Republic. This is a ridiculous story here and I still can’t get over it. It started last Friday when Nicole, who was supposed to bake something to represent Client Services, said that she wouldn’t have time to bake anything that weekend as she was going flying with some friends in Essex. She said she was probably just going to buy a cake. And so, I said, “I’ll bake you a cake!” I wasn’t serious, but she handed me £20 and the next thing I knew, I was asking what she wanted me to bake. A tart, she said.

A tart. I said to her I don’t usually make tarts. I have more experience with cakes. To be fair, Nicole said that I could do that if I wanted, but I wanted to please, so I went for tart. And that’s why I was baking 3 apple frangipane tarts on Sunday during the London Marathon. I only brought 2 to work on Monday, as me and Katie ate half of a tart that Sunday.

I was going to go in early and put them in the fridge so no one would realise that I’d baked instead of Nicole, but there were a few already at the office when I got there and Phoebe and Fran found out. Now, I’ve got to say that my intentions were not to get Nicole to the next round. I figured that if she wasn’t going to bake, then Nick, who was representing the Creative department would automatically go through, and he’d already got through the last round because no one in the Creative department had bothered to bake anything. So I thought I’d just take the opportunity to bake and at least make Nick think he had to compete with another entry before getting through again. Someone offered me an opportunity to do what I love and I took it. Simple as that.

Anyway, Nicole and I thought we’d still have some fun with it and only let people know after the voting. Long story short, my/Nicole’s apple frangipane tart lost against Nick’s blueberry cake! I was well-gutted even though it really wasn’t my round. And technically, it means that Nick has already beaten me. Which is just… Grand.

One of my apple tarts:

Nick’s winning blueberry cake:

To be fair, his cake was good, and that’s a good photo of it, if I may say so myself. But I also took that photo, so umm yeah.. Of course I try to make all my food shots look half decent. ;)

Anyway, needless to say I got a lot of stick, firstly for baking for someone else and supposedly “cheating” and then losing, regardless. All in good fun though. I have a feeling they’re going to make fun of me everytime I bring in a cake now. But I’m not taking any chances and will do a proper cake for my next round (one that I’m actually supposed to be in). Any recommendations for a show-stopping cake, anyone?

Stripey Republicans

We had a Strip(e) off Day at Agency Republic on Wednesday. Almost everyone dressed in stripes and at the end of the day we had a photo shoot opposite the Glassmill.

Republicans stand behind Al Campbell, our new Executive Creative Director.

Some Republicans head back to the office to finish off some work.

While others head straight to the pub.

London Marathon 2011

Every year, we get a pretty good view of the London Marathon from the flat. We just have to stick our heads out the window and look down at the street. The downside is that it can be pretty noisy, with the crowds cheering and if you were planning to go anywhere further than the local shops, it could take almost half an hour to walk to Canary Wharf (it usually takes only 10 minutes) because of all the detours you have to make.

I found it such an inconvenience last year and didn’t enjoy it at all. But it was quite fun this time round. Katie and I took T-rex out to watch the marathon.

T-rex was well into it, cheering on the runners.

He even started running alongside them.

I didn’t pay much attention last year, but I realised that the marathon can be entertaining, especially with so many runners in fancy dress.

This runner dressed up as Wilma/Wenda from Where’s Wally? is possibly my favourite.

Another favourite of mine is this guy dressed as the Black Swan. And Katie had been humming a tune from Bananas in Pyjamas since yesterday, so it was only fitting that I’d spot one of them (couldn’t see which number, I couldn’t get in front of him in time).

All in all, an excellent day and it was nice to pretend that the crowd was cheering me on as I went about my on baking marathon, making 3 apple frangipane tarts.
