Bread & butter pudding

Earlier today I found out that my visa application was successful, which means I get to stay in the UK for at least a little while longer. The timing was perfect, as I’d baked bread & butter pudding the night before and brought it into work. As soon as I read the email, I shared a high-five with Mike and rushed to the kitchen to serve the pudding. I got a bit of a cheer from everyone, both for the pudding and the visa news, but mostly the pudding. Having been with Agency Republic for almost 2 years now, they’re my family away from home. And I can’t think of better company to share some good old-fashioned bread pudding (how very English!) with, than my fellow Republicans.

On a side note, I’ve been very busy moving flats, sorting out new house bills and accounts and work visas, I’ll start posting more regularly once I get the internet set up at the new flat over the weekend.

So you know how my oven wasn’t working? Well, our landlord replaced it with a new one while I was down in Falmouth. I was really looking forward to being able to bake again, until I found out that the new one also wasn’t really working. Which is really really annoying. It seems to work fine with the grill setting, but everytime I switch it to fan oven, it trips the fuse board. And since we’re all moving out in about a month, I can’t be bothered to get it fixed. So until then, no more baking. I’ve got to keep myself busy with the hob instead.

I’d planned to bake some macarons, frangipane tarts and bread to bring to work on a Monday, but since I couldn’t, I made some spreads instead. Took me 3 times to not screw up the caramel, but it was worth it. Everyone at work absolutely loved it and couldn’t get enough, it was almost gone in one morning! The recipe is from in the kitchen series on designsponge while the lemon curd recipe is the one I usually follow for the lemon brioche croissants. Enjoy!

Temujin Doran

Every once in a while, you discover someone who seems to be great at everything. I am in absolute awe of Temujin Doran, a filmmaker/illustrator/musician who studied at Falmouth as well. I saw his short film about his job as a projectionist last year, but had never checked out any of his other work at that time. A couple of days ago he liked my Falmouth video on Vimeo, so I proceeded to check out his videos.

And let me tell you, whatever pride I had of my Falmouth video simply vanished after watching his short films. They are simply brilliant. They are moving and inspirational, which is exactly what I’d like to do; move people, whether it be with films, words, pictures or food. He narrates his films in an articulate manner and he makes his own music for them as well. I really wish I could do that, sadly I don’t have a musical bone in me (but I do have some good taste in music, if I may say so myself).

I heart Falmouth

Another video I made in Falmouth. Apologies for that. Actually, I take that back. I shouldn’t apologise, it’s a beautiful place. For all the seagulls that try to steal your pasty. For cream tea. For fish and chips on the beach. For all the friends that I made there. For tutors. For horizontal rain. For being able to walk everywhere and not worry about catching the last tube. For the 111 steps of Jacob’s Ladder. For Gylly beach. For all the memories. I heart Falmouth.

I saw this a couple of months ago and recently I keep going back to it for inspiration. It’s absolutely brilliant and though I don’t surf or document surfing, I can relate to his passion. It’s absolutely what I want in life, to be doing what I love because I love it and not for fame, fortune or anything else. Amazing.

Summer in London

We had a picnic in Weavers Fields near Brick Lane when A was here. We were planning to make so many things, but my oven broke and I had to stop over my landlady’s to finish baking the lemon poppy seed muffin batter we’d already prepared. Alas, we were not meant to enjoy them after all, as I burnt them.

But the grape and rosemary focaccia I made did turn out pretty good.

It was boiling hot in London last Sunday, probably almost 30C. But the sun gave plenty of good light, so I managed to get some nicely lit shots (mostly amazed by the light on the weeds/grass) for the video:

Ladurée Covent Garden

A stopped by London after her holiday in Croatia last week. We went to Ladurée in Covent Garden along with some of my ex-colleagues for some tea and macarons. It’s one of the more fancier places that I’ve been to in a while, and we’re not exactly rich, so A and I shared the macarons.

We got a plate of pistachio, raspberry, lemon, chocolate and caramel macarons and had half of each.

We also tried the Ispahan, which I had been really looking forward to. Raspberry, rose and lychee. Wow, winning!

Next time we go for macarons, I’m having a whole Ispahan to myself.
