End of week 1

Looks like I’m still as slow as ever in updating my blog. Well, I’m in London now, doing my work placement at Profero. I just ended my first week, it’s been great so far, looking forward to doing more things in the next 3 weeks that I’m here. Camden Town is a really cool place, with an amazing market selling all sorts of things.

I still have yet to put up my packaging and editorial project from my 2nd year at Falmouth but will do so when I get the time. Till next time…

Jubilee Wharf Branding

One of my projects this year was branding for Jubilee Wharf, a sustainable, environmentally-friendly building in Penryn, Cornwall. The brief was to create the identity for Jubilee Wharf and to promote a live/work creative community in a sustainable environment.

The brand promise that I settled on was ‘creative playground’ and the brand values being - creative, fun, playful and energetic.

Here are the results of the project:

Jubilee Wharf Logo

Signage for the different areas in Jubilee Wharf

Flags to increase visibility and pique interests of passer-bys

Sign for the cafe

T-shirt design

Branding on coffee cups in cafe

Design for programme of events brochure

Advertising - blank posters to encourage creativity

Poster in context

Fun packs, containing art materials, distributed to people to encourage creativity, with the possibility of arranging an exhibition of the collection of finished artworks at Jubilee Wharf in order to draw people down to the place.

Nasi Lemak

Yesterday night, I had Michael over for dinner. I made Nasi Lemak, as promised. It was my first time trying to cook rice with coconut milk and it turned out rather good. Makes you want to have rice that way all the time, but nah, it’s way too fattening to do that.

Well, well, well… This is one of the best dishes I’ve prepared since I’ve been in Falmouth, I would say. Once again, I had some help from the instant Sambal Tumis sauce, which I would never have been able to make by myself, it’s not even possible to find good chilli peppers here. Or that might just be an excuse, it’s too troublesome to prepare it myself.

Anyway, here’s how the dish turned out:

Oh yes…

Window messaging

I recently put together a 103×84cm piece and displayed it outside my bedroom window in Falmouth. Why? Don’t ask why, I just felt like doing it. This is my second one. I keep thinking of certain song lyrics, words that really speak to me or I just can’t get out of my head.

This one came from Air - Another Day:

Say
Goodbye
Sunshine
Daylight

‘Cause it’s just another day
You will lose it anyway

It’s great to see people looking up at my window, wondering what it’s all about. If I could provide something out of the ordinary to spice up the day, then it’s good enough for me. But there’s an opportunity of self-promotion to be taken advantage here. I might put up the url for my website on my window soon.

It’s very reminiscent of my mural days back in Singapore:

Hehehe… Free publicity!

Curry

Today’s blog post: design-unrelated.
Although it still features my skill. My cooking skill, that is!

Michael and I were discussing about our dinner plans, talking about the various dishes we can whip up and teasing each other about the ever-tempting option of eating out. All this on webcam, when we’re only less than 10 mins away from each other.

I offered to cook him Nasi Lemak, a traditional Malay dish which you can’t find for ____ in Falmouth. Not tonight, he said. He was going to settle for instant noodles and sardines. Pfftt, what’s that about?

Well, he missed out big time. Because though I didn’t end up making Nasi Lemak, I cooked a mean curry, with paratha and rice instead.

To be honest, I didn’t make the paratha… It was one of those frozen instant ones, where you just fry, but hey, the rest was all me! That paratha was really nice though, all soft and flaky… Mmmm…

Typographic Diary - continued

As promised, here are some double page spreads from the diary:

Jan month-to-view with typographic quote

Feb month-to-view, with typographic quote and biography

Mar month-to-view

Sample of week-to-view

Information on paper sizes

I also considered different versions of the week-to-view:

The typical horizontal view

An alternative view, square boxes for better use of the space to make drawings, etc. Sort of like post-it notes.

In the end, I chose to design the week-to-view with vertical columns instead, as it was good for planning your day from morning till afternoon/night. Although, it is arguable that the horizontal view is better as it provides better visual aids and makes it easier to find the dates while flicking through the diary. I’m sure if I had spent more time developing it, I would have found a solution to combine both points. To be honest, a possible solution just came to mind, but the project’s done and submitted, so I’m going to leave it at that.

Typographic diary 2009

Just handed in my boards for our latest typographic project. We had to create a Modernist diary aimed at graphic designers for 2009. Using only typography, no images. I’m quite pleased with the final outcome, although I realize there’s still a lot more that can be done to improve on it.
